Floor Martens (1998 Reuver, NL) cuts close to the bone. After discovering the fragile corpse of a rabbit in her parents’ garden, she decided to get as near to life and death as she could touch. She became apprentice to a hunter and leather tanner for a day, and she learned how to butcher meat. This led to experiments using animal blood, as well as her own, making little objects she calls bloodstones. Performing alchemical feats, she also turned menstrual blood and semen into powder. When poured in two circles on the floor alongside one another, the two sources of life suddenly became two deaths, lying side by side. Like the human hair she dreads and braids into hanging sculptural forms, Martens’ source materials are the decomposing remnants of a body. By intervening in the process of decay, or holding onto its traces, she finds a way of also holding onto memory and keeping something alive.

Photographing friends and loved ones has become another way for Martens to freeze time. In stills she tries to capture corporeal expressions of their psyches. Photographs showing muscles and bones lithe beneath skin connect the audience with something nonverbal and primal. Whether an animal’s life cut short or a body forever distilled in a frame, Martens’ looks for vestiges of the soul, of the ineffable, in moments of arrested movement. Text by Amanda Sarroff for Open Studios 2021 Jan van Eyck Academy.

Floor Martens (1998 Reuver) is beeldend kunstenaar. Ze studeerde in 2019 af op de Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design op de afdeling Fine Arts. Ze verkent in haar werk transformatieprocessen van mens, dier en natuur en de connecties tussen dezen. De waarden van onze eigen lichamelijke materialen komt daarin vaak als onderwerp naar voren alsook thema’s zoals intimiteit, (on)tastbaarheid en kwetsbaarheid. Door in te grijpen in het proces van verval of de sporen daarvan te koesteren, vindt ze een manier om de herinnering van het leven vast te houden en zo deze thema’s naar voren te brengen. Of het nu het afgebroken lichaam van een dier is, of een momenteel beeld ingekaderd en voor eeuwig verstild, Martens zoekt naar de overblijfselen van de ziel, naar het onuitsprekelijke in momenten van stilgevallen beweging.
